Pengertian Adjective

• Adjective adalah suatu kata yang digunakan untuk menerangkan noun atau pronoun yang dapat berupa: person (orang), place (tempat), animal (binatang), maupun thing (benda, konsep abstrak). Adjective merupakan satu dari delapan part of speech.
• Adjective diletakkan di depan noun (contoh: beautiful girls) atau setelah be (contoh: The lady is beautiful, She is beautiful).

Pembentukan Adjective

Adjective atau kata sifat dapat dibentuk melalui derivation (proses pembentukkan kata turunan).

Pada pengembangannya, kata sifat ini digunakan pada

• Adjective Phrase

Adjective Phrase merupakan kelompok kata sifat yang terdiri dari adjective dan preposition.

Contoh: accurate in, aware of, difficult to, easy to

• Adjective Clause

Adjective clause merupakan dependent clause yang berfungsi sebagai adjective, untuk menjelaskan noun atau pronoun pada suatu complex sentence (kalimat kompleks).

Contoh: He is the man who works hard to support their daily needs.

• Reduced Adjective Clause

Reduced Adjective Clause (mempersingkat adjective clause) dapat dilakukan jika di hanya terdapat satu subject dalam complex sentence.

Contoh normal: The student who always goes to school by bus is my friend.

Contoh reduksi: The student always going to school by bus is my friend.

Hubungan dengan Part of Speech Lain

Hubungan kata sifat ini dengan part of speech lain yaitu:

• Sebagai Noun Modifier

Adjective sebagai noun modifier digunakan untuk membentuk sebuah noun phrase.

Contoh: someone special, delicious noodle recipes

• Adjective dan Linking Verb

Adjective biasa dirangkai dengan linking verb (am, is, are, was, were, been) di dalam suatu kalimat.

Contoh: am diligent, are difficult

• Adjective dan The Verbs of Sense

Adjective biasa dirangkai dengan the verbs of sense (become, feel, look, seem, smell, taste) di dalam suatu kalimat.

Contoh: feel sad, taste delicious

• Adjective dan Adverb

Sebagian adverb merupakan gabungan dari adjective dengan suffix (akhiran) tertentu. Selain itu, dua kata ini dengan formulasi tertentu dapat digabungkan menjadi suatu frasa.

Contoh: much more better, totally easy

• Adjective dan Participle

Participle digunakan pada reduksi adjective clause. Selain itu, participle juga berfungsi sebagai adjective ketika menjadi modifier pada noun phrase.

Contoh: a sleeping child, the drunk man

Special Adverb pada Penggunaan Adjective

Special adverbs seringkali digunakan bersama kata sifat ini untuk menguatkan arti. Adapun special adverb adalah sebagai berikut.

• Too
• Very
• Enough
• So and Such
